Plateau State Government Shuts Down All Basic Schools

The Plateau State Government has ordered an immediate shutdown of all basic schools across the state due to escalating security concerns. The state acted swiftly, citing a proactive need to prevent potential attacks.

According to Richard Jonah, Public Relations Officer for the Plateau State Universal Basic Education Board (PSUBEB), the directive follows “attacks in schools in some states.” He explained that the government wants to fortify its security measures before resuming classes.

The board issued a circular indicating staggered closures: Government Junior Model Secondary Schools will close from Saturday, November 22, 2025, while primary and day schools shut down on Monday, November 24. Meanwhile, PSUBEB assured parents that the closure remains temporary and urged them to remain calm.

It also asked Local Government Education Authorities, school heads, and community leaders to cooperate fully and stay vigilant. In Shendam Local Government Area, a parent named Moses Jeremiah told media that GSS Shendam students returned home after a threat letter allegedly from Boko Haram warned of an attack.

Despite that claim, Plateau State Police Public Relations Officer SP Alfred Alabo denied receiving any official threat reports. This shutdown comes amid a wave of school attacks in Nigeria’s north-central region.

Recently, gunmen abducted 25 schoolgirls in Kebbi State and attacked a Catholic school in Niger State. Consequently, residents and security watchers say Plateau’s move reflects a rising national urgency to protect students.

By ordering this “precautionary” closure, the Plateau Government underscores its commitment to child safety. Many hope that the pause will give authorities time to strengthen security and reassure vulnerable communities.
