Russia has officially reacted to US threats against Nigeria, urging Washington to respect international law and Nigeria’s sovereignty.
Foreign Ministry spokeswoman Maria Zakharova made the statement during a press briefing in Moscow on Friday.
She stressed that Russia supports peaceful diplomacy and opposes any form of foreign intimidation toward sovereign African nations.
The reaction came after US President Donald Trump warned of possible military and economic actions against Nigeria over alleged human rights abuses.
However, Nigerian officials dismissed the threats, insisting that the country’s internal matters should not attract foreign interference. Russia’s position adds a new dimension to the growing tension between Washington and Abuja.
Moreover, Zakharova emphasised that Russia will continue strengthening its cooperation with Nigeria in defence, energy, and trade.
Analysts believe this stance reinforces Moscow’s broader push to deepen ties with African nations amid increasing Western pressure.
According to them, the statement also signals Russia’s intent to present itself as a reliable partner for African sovereignty.
Meanwhile, the Nigerian government maintained its focus on internal stability, counter-terrorism, and economic reform.
It also continues to engage diplomatically with global partners while asserting its independence. As tension simmers, observers say that how Abuja manages relations with both global powers could shape future foreign policy alignments.
Russia’s statement received global attention, with international media highlighting it’s responds as symbolic to the rising multipolar rivalry.
The development underscores a shifting global balance where African nations play growing strategic roles in diplomacy and trade.
