Osun State Governor Ademola Adeleke has appointed his nephew, Afrobeats superstar David Adeleke, popularly known as Davido, as the Chairman of the Osun State Sports Trust Fund. The appointment, announced on October 22, 2025, aims to revive the state’s sports sector through private investment and youth-focused development. The news quickly sparked nationwide conversations, with many praising the decision while others questioned the governor’s choice of a family member.
Governor Adeleke explained that the newly created Sports Trust Fund would operate independently to attract corporate partnerships, rebuild facilities, and nurture emerging talent across Osun State. He described Davido as a “global ambassador of youth excellence” whose influence could bring both visibility and investment to Osun’s sports industry.
Davido accepted the role with gratitude, saying he would leverage his global reach and partnerships, including his ongoing PUMA endorsement, to secure sponsorships and empower local athletes. “This is more than an appointment; it’s a call to give back,” Davido said during the unveiling ceremony at the Government House, Osogbo. “I want to help create opportunities for the youth of Osun.”
Reactions on social media were immediate and emotional. Twitter user @iamfemzy wrote, “Davido’s energy and passion make him the perfect fit.” Another user, @tolu_szn, tweeted, “It’s a good move if he delivers results, not just vibes.” Meanwhile, @temmygold shared, “Say what you want—Davido has the heart for this. Osun sports will shine again.”
Reports from the Osun State Ministry of Youth and Sports indicate that preliminary talks have begun with PUMA, UBA Foundation, and Access Bank to fund the first set of sports development projects. The Osun Sports Trust Fund is expected to begin full operations before the end of 2025.
