Love turned sour in Lagos yesterday after a man knelt to propose, but his girlfriend kept walking without turning back. The emotional scene happened outside a popular café in Lekki, where witnesses filmed the heartbreaking moment.
In the viral clip, the man clutched a ring box while calling her name, yet she never looked back. Onlookers gasped as he stayed on one knee, visibly shaking while she disappeared into the street crowd. Someone in the background could be heard saying, “This is painful to watch,” as phones captured the shocking rejection.
The short video spread fast on X, TikTok, and Instagram within hours, racking up thousands of comments and reactions. One X user wrote, “He risked it all, but she chose peace — respect to both.” Another posted, “Public proposals are risky; have that conversation first before surprising someone!”
The man, whose identity remains private, later shared an Instagram Story asking for space and thanking people for their support. Meanwhile, many Nigerians debated the trend of public proposals, calling them “romantic but dangerous.”
Relationship experts also weighed in, saying communication is key before taking such emotional leaps in public. Interestingly, cafés and malls across Lagos have seen more of such scenes since 2023 as public proposals trend online.
However, this one ended in heartbreak, leaving social media users both sympathetic and divided. By evening, #WalkedAway and #ProposalGoneWrong trended among Nigeria’s top hashtags on X.
Despite the pain, many admired his courage, with one user tweeting, “Love can break you, but it still makes us believe.”
