A Fulani elder in the Hurti community of Manguna District in Bokkos, has revealed that the attackers who killed 46 residents were Fulani.
He explained this in a video released on Tuesday by journalist Masara Kim Usman. The elder noted that he has lived peacefully among the mainly Christian residents for over thirty years. He said he recognised the gunmen immediately because they spoke Fulfulde and displayed familiar Fulani behaviour.
When the gunmen entered the community, he approached them and pleaded in Fulfulde. Additionally, he asked why they wanted to kill people he had long regarded as friends and family.
However, the attackers told him that nothing would stop their mission. They also warned that they would kill him if he refused to step aside.
He explained that the gunmen pushed him away and then launched a violent attack, killing 46 residents and burning Christian homes.
He added that the most painful part was realizing that his own tribesmen carried out the killings despite his desperate pleas.
Notably, the attack did not harm any Muslim or Fulani resident in the community.
The elder said he heard the gunmen speaking fluent Fulfulde as they discussed their plans. Furthermore, he explained that women ran to his home and begged him for help, but he lacked the power to save them.
He stressed that he had lived with the community for many years and considered them his family. After the attackers left, he climbed a nearby hill and watched the entire incident unfold.
He said the gunmen later regrouped and began shooting across the town. Because of the heavy gunfire, he and others hid in a room until calm returned. He said the community lost many people during the frightening incident.
