Nigeria Police Issue Order to Arrest Officers Escorting VIPs Illegally

The Nigerian Police Force has ordered the immediate arrest of any officer who escorts VIPs outside official assignments. The directive enforces President Bola Tinubu’s recent order on the withdrawal of police from private security roles.

Inspector General of Police Kayode Egbetokun released the instruction in a confidential wireless message dated November 30, 2025. He sent it to senior officers across all commands and stressed the urgency of full compliance.

According to Sahara Reporters, the memo targeted key units, including the Mobile Police Force and the VIP Protection Unit. It warned that officers who escort VIPs without approval will face instant arrest. Moreover, the directive cautioned supervising officers who fail to enforce the rule.

The memo clearly stated that commands must arrest any officer providing unauthorized VIP protection within their area. It also noted that disciplinary action would follow for supervisors who ignore the order.

Furthermore, the IGP assigned enforcement duties to the Compol X-Squads and the IGPMU. This move aims to ensure strict monitoring and swift punishment across all police formations.

The message carried a “very important” classification, which reinforced its finality and demanded immediate action. Officers received instructions to act without delay or further reminders.

This police action followed President Tinubu’s directive issued on November 23, 2025. During a major security meeting in Abuja, the President ordered the withdrawal of police from VIP duties. He explained that officers must return to core policing tasks as insecurity rises nationwide.

Top security officials attended the meeting, including Army Chief Lt. General Waidi Shaibu and Air Marshal Sunday Kelvin Aneke. Also present were IGP Egbetokun and DSS Director-General Tosin Adeola Ajayi.
