Nigerians Renew Call For Justice For Ochanya 7 Years After Teen’s Death

Nigerians have renewed calls for Justice for Ochanya seven years after the tragic death of 13-year-old Ochanya Ogbanje.

The renewed outrage followed fresh media reports highlighting Nigeria’s slow judicial process in child abuse cases.

Ochanya, a student of Federal Government Girls’ College, Gboko, Benue State, died on October 17, 2018, from complications linked to years of alleged s*xual abuse by her guardian, Andrew Ogbuja, and his son, Victor.

Medical reports confirmed that the abuse led to Vesicovaginal Fistula (VVF), which eventually caused her death.

The case sparked nationwide protests in 2018, forcing authorities to charge the suspects. However, in 2022, a Benue State High Court acquitted Andrew Ogbuja, citing insufficient evidence, while Victor Ogbuja remains at large.

Consequently, child rights advocates have accused the justice system of failing to protect victims of sexual violence. Activists and lawyers have also urged the federal government to reopen the investigation and ensure proper accountability.

On social media, the hashtag #JusticeForOchanya began trending again as Nigerians expressed frustration over the lack of closure.

One user on X (formerly Twitter) wrote, “Seven years later, still no justice for Ochanya—our system is broken.” Another commented, “Her story should never be forgotten; every child deserves protection and justice.

Many users called for stronger laws against child molestation and faster court trials to deter future offenders.

Advocacy groups, including the Women’s Rights Advancement and Protection Alternative (WRAPA) and Mirabel Centre, reiterated their commitment to pursuing justice.

They emphasised that Ochanya’s case remains a painful reminder of widespread sexual abuse in Nigeria.

Meanwhile, legal experts stressed that political will and institutional reform are crucial to achieving lasting justice for victims like Ochanya.
