The Uniform Symbolizes State Authority, No Matter the Age of the Wearer – Gen. Irabor Tells Wike

Former Chief of Defence Staff Gen. Irabor Lucky condemned FCT Minister Nyesom Wike over his harsh exchange with Naval Officer A.M. Yerima during a demolition exercise.

He addressed the issue at the 21st All Nigeria Editors Conference and warned that the minister’s conduct threatened the dignity of the armed forces. According to Gen. Irabor, the uniform represents the authority of the state and must command respect at all times.

He stressed that the uniform retains its authority regardless of the age or rank of the officer wearing it.

Wike had stopped a demolition attempt linked to a disputed property and called the officer a fool during the confrontation. However, the former CDS said the minister had no right to use such language against a commissioned officer.

He explained that disrespecting a uniformed officer also disrespects the Commander-in-Chief who granted that commission. He noted that such behaviour sets a dangerous precedent and may encourage citizens to disregard military authority.

Moreover, Gen. Irabor argued that many Nigerians no longer understand the civic values tied to military uniforms. He said society must remember that uniforms reflect discipline, loyalty, and national duty.

He also reminded listeners that military law examines both action and intention when assessing misconduct. Therefore, he insisted that the minister’s remarks crossed legal and ethical lines.

He further urged the media to promote civic education and highlight the importance of respecting state institutions. He added that the country must restore the culture of patriotism once taught in schools.

According to him, citizens should recognise that military officers represent national stability and must be treated with honour. Gen. Irabor concluded that public officials must lead by example and uphold the dignity of state symbols.
